Gaitán Behind Bars

A mural of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, a revered Colombian political leader, emerges through the grid of a protective storefront gate. His monochrome figure contrasts starkly with the neon halo of modern Colombia painted behind him — vivid colours, fragmented typography, and raw energy radiating through steel mesh.

The metal grille serves as both literal barrier and metaphor: Gaitán's ideals, once vibrant and revolutionary, now layered in history, resilience and surveillance. The texture of the mesh throws the viewer into reflection — are we preserving his legacy, or locking it away?

This piece captures not just a man, but a movement still pulsing beneath Bogotá’s surface. An image steeped in history, filtered through modern resistance and reverence.
